Honey Island Swamp, Louisiana

by graceelena on August 9, 2010

In June I visited New Orleans, LA with my friend Heather. We had a great time experiencing the city. One morning, much too early, we headed out to Honey Island Swamp.

On the way our bus driver gave us an informal tour of the Hurricane Katrina damage. While I knew the city was still experiencing a great deal of loss I was unaware of just how great it is- almost 5 years later. For instance, the school has still not been opened. Children are being bused to the neighboring city.

At the swamp we were introduced to Capitan Jack, our guide and he excitedly showed us around. I thought if we were lucky we would see an alligator. Well, it turns out it’s not hard to encounter an alligator in Louisiana. We saw 5 including one Captain Jack had never seen before that was only about two feet long.

The swamp is beautiful and peaceful and has no Mosquitos. The current moves too quickly for Mosquitos to hang around. That was a relief. I also learned that alligators are calm animals. They do not attack unless they are hunting for food or are provoked. Crocodiles are the agressive ones that are known to attack without warning. They have the more rounded snouts and are not found in Louisiana.

Despite the early wake up call we had a fabulous time. If you are ever in Louisiana I recommend taking a swamp tour.

@Suburban Sweetheart, It was really, really cool. Seeing an alligator up close and jumping for food is a bit surreal.

Love the collage, although I might be too much of a woos for a swamp tour ;) . I also like how you reminded us that NO still has much to rebuild from after Katrina’s destruction.

It’s not too bad and there are no Mosquitos. The devastation is awful. There should be more attention brought to the issue. It’s the 5 year anniversary this month.
