Today is Mexico’s bicentennial! 200 years ago the Mexican people defeated the Spanish army. Last night the celebrations began in El Zócolo in Mexico City. Hundreds of thousands of Mexicans filled El Zócolo. Univision aired the fiesta live. It was one of the most beautiful festivals I’ve ever seen.
Here are a couple pictures from the event. The BBC has a stunning collection of photos here.
“El Grito” was the cry for independence that began the war. Every year the President leads the country in “El Grito.” After each the following statements shout “¡Viva!”
¡Viva México!
¡Viva México!
¡Viva México!
