The Great Toilet Paper Roll Art Project

by graceelena on October 10, 2011

A month ago I saw a snowflake art project that is made using empty toilet paper rolls. I immediately emailed my closest friends and family asking them to save their empty rolls. I plan to fill my apartment window with snowflakes. Can you imagine walking down a city street and then looking up and seeing a giant window filled with glistening snowflakes? Spectacular.

I figured I would need about twenty to thirty rolls to get a nice fill of the window. That would be easy to do by December. But then the idea became bigger. SO BIG. As in about 100 or more toilet paper rolls. The plan is to run with the snowflake pattern but change the colors and hang them differently. On a wall, perhaps. I know, I am being vague but I want to create it first. I have a feeling it is going to be amazing.

My plan is to continue with the snowflake idea and then create the new project over my winter break. I love that I will be creating something beautiful out of recycled materials and that my friends and family are helping me. My friends have been very willing to help but their reactions are hilarious. One of them looks around and then discretely passes me rolls in class. Another puts them in bags for me and my friend soulmate, well, she does this:

You know how I know I love you? I saw a toilet paper sitting on the top of the communal trashcan on the side of my house and I stuck my hand in and got it without hesitation.

So, now I have 3 ready for you.
Who knew preparing for an art project could be so fun? If you have any empty toilet paper rolls lying around send them my way. Or make some pretty snowflakes.
*Note, this project has also made me think about how much I consume. I’ve read statistics before about how much toilet paper Americans use and now that I am looking out for empty rolls I am hyper aware. But this is a post for another day…

This is such a great idea! I think I’m going to have to make a bunch to decorate and maybe even give out as gifts. Thanks for sharing. :

Ooh – I need to see a photo once you’ve finished with your creation! Sounds whimsical and creative!
