Top Ten Love Songs

by graceelena on February 1, 2013

Over the winter break I went on a road trip with my parents. During the long drive I compiled a list of my top ten favorite love songs. It wasn’t easy to think of songs that were not strongly connected to other people. I could easily make a top ten list of songs that remind me of ex-boyfriends.

These songs are timeless for me. Even if some of them I listened to on repeat during a relationship. Some are recent finds and others are part of the soundtrack to my life.

In honor of February and Valentine’s Day, which I love despite the hype and commercialization, I present to you, my top ten love songs.

10. Gray or BlueJaymay
A friend introduced me to this song a few months ago and I’ve been a little obsessed ever since. The lyrics are so sweet and capture the complex emotions of being in love with someone but not yet being able to be with them.

9. You Are The Best ThingRay LaMontague
The music and Ray LaMontague’s voice make me want to be on the dance floor with someone special. Preferably with that person that is the best thing that has ever happened to me. But for now my dancing feet won’t discriminate.

8. Just The Way You AreBilly Joel
I find that it is easy to try and change a person. This song serves as a good reminder that the best person for us is the one we don’t want to change. The one you want to sing this song to.

7. Loving WingsDave Matthews and Tim Reynolds
After years of being told I need to attend a DMB concert, I finally did this last September. It was life changing. I was blown away by every moment. Since then I’ve listened to every album. Loving Wings has quickly become a favorite.

6. Love Me TenderElvis
I grew up listening to a lot of Elvis. My dad is a big fan. This song is simple and perfect. It captures the concept of “true love” the best.

5. Make You Feel My LoveGarth Brooks
There are several versions of this song. Bob Dylan wrote it and since then there have been several covers. Most recently by Adele. My favorite version is by Garth Brooks. It’s raw and filled with emotion. I cry every time. I couldn’t find this version to post but here are the lyrics.

4. UnforgettableNat King Cole
One of my first memories is listening to this song with my dad. He would play Natalie Cole’s Unforgettable album often. Probably because I liked it so much. Later I fell in love with this version of Nat King Cole singing alone. His voice makes me swoon.

3. You Send MeSam Cooke
When I dream of someone serenading me this is the first song I think of. It would make a good proposal song, don’t you think?

2. At LastEtta James
This song brings up a lot of complicated emotions for me. It is tied strongly to the death of my uncle. Even so, it still represents love and a love in the deepest sense possible.

1. Amaneci En Tus BrazosLuis Miguel
The ultimate love song. The lyrics are incredibly passionate and sexy. It’s the kind of song that makes you blush and smile. When Luis Miguel sings it nothing else matters. This video is his live performance of the song. Watch it. It’s good. Really good.

I hope you like my list. What are your favorites?

Amaneci en Tus Brazos, written by Mexico’s legendary Jose Alfredo Jimenez is the ultimate love song. A close second for me is Sabor a Mi, especially when performed by Grace Garner.

Sabor a mi is a good one. There are so many good Spanish love songs. They deserve another list.
